Our Lettuce
We took a good hard look at the lettuce we were using for our sandwiches and we found that there was room for improvement. We were getting variations in colour, sometimes it was green, sometimes almost white and often some shade in between. The lettuce leaves were very tightly packed and difficult to separate sometimes, which lead to the sandwich phenomenon known as “goblin caves” when the sandwich was cut. Also the lettuce had large hard cores in the centre that were just no use to anyone.
We went to our growers and explained the issues we were having and they produced over twenty different lettuces for us to choose from. Of course we were looking for the perfect lettuce for our sandwiches; we found one that was a vibrant green, one that had a great variegated leaf edge, another that had a pleasing mild taste, not at all bitter or harsh, and yet another that was crunchy and stayed so for the life of the sandwiches.
We reported all this to our growers and they set to work.
That year the Raynors had two new arrivals in the family; the first was Heather Raynor’s daughter, Verity Grace, bonny and beautiful! The second was a new lettuce. It was mild in taste, a vibrant green colour, with a variegated edge and stayed crunchy for ages. There are of course no prizes by now for guessing what we decided to call it…
Verity Grace lettuce is now used exclusively by us and can be found across our product range.
