We are proud of our ham. We make a lot of ham sandwiches, fresh every day and the ham that goes into them is another example of how Raynors go that little bit further than other sandwich manufacturers.
Our ham is 100% gammon ham, using only leg meat, made using a traditional Wiltshire cure (there is not an Essex cure, if there was we would be using it), and produced less than twenty miles from our sandwichporium in Chelmsford in the village of Tolleshunt Major in the heart of the Essex countryside.
Wicks Manor Farm is another family run business with an eye for the best way to keep things local. The pigs are born and raised on the farm, fed on wheat and barley grown on the farm and they then use the straw left over to line the open yards where the pigs live. The pigs are butchered and processed on the farm and are sent to a local abattoir so even they have a low carbon footprint.
In addition we have agreed on a reusable plastic crate exchange to deliver our ham into the factory rather than cardboard boxes. This has reduced the amount of cardboard going into recycling bins at our factory by 700kg a year.
But we have not stopped there.
Raynors now redirect over a tonne a week of bread crusts and slices (we don’t use the crusts or the slice next to the crusts in our sandwiches) off to feed the pigs at Wicks Manor Farm. That is a tonne of organic waste a week not going into landfill sites. The closed loop recycling system has been declared a great success and is another example of how we think a little bit differently at Raynors.
